Marondera RDC Shines at the 2026 National Fire Awareness Week Launch in Goromonzi

The Marondera Rural District Council (MRDC) proudly joined environmental leaders, government officials, and communities from across the nation at the official launch of the 2026 National Fire Awareness Week and the Global Integrated Fire Management Hub.

Hosted at Goromonzi High School in the neighboring Goromonzi Rural District, the high-profile event served as a clarion call to action against the devastating impact of veld fires, which threaten Zimbabwe’s agricultural economy, wildlife, and natural ecosystems.

A Unified National Response

The launch was officially officiated by His Excellency, Vice President K. D. C. Mohadi, who underscored the urgency of moving beyond reactive firefighting toward proactive environmental management. The Vice President’s presence highlighted the government’s commitment to combating the climate-induced escalation of veld fires.

The event brought together a diverse coalition of stakeholders, including:

  • Senior Government Officials and Policymakers
  • Local Leadership and Traditional Chiefs
  • Academia and Environmental Researchers
  • Development Partners and International Agencies (including the FAO)
  • Parastatals (such as the Environmental Management Agency – EMA)
  • Fellow Local Authorities

Running under the powerful 2026 theme—“Prevent, Protect, Preserve: Combating Veld Fires Together”—the event emphasized that mitigating the scourge of uncontrolled fires requires a coordinated, multi-sectoral approach.

MRDC on Exhibition: Leading by Example

As a proactive local authority, Marondera RDC took the opportunity to exhibit its own district-level fire management strategies, showcasing how council initiatives are translating national policies into grassroots action.

The MRDC exhibition stand highlighted the council’s ongoing efforts, including:

  • Community Sensitization: Detailing our recent aggressive awareness campaigns, such as the localized training sessions held at Karimba Primary School.
  • Local Firefighting Readiness: Showcasing how the district is successfully reconstituting and equipping local community firefighting teams.
  • Strategic Planning: Demonstrating how MRDC integrates environmental protection into land allocation, agricultural extension, and spatial planning.

By participating in the exhibition, MRDC not only shared its successes but also engaged in vital knowledge exchange with other districts and environmental experts, ensuring that Marondera remains at the cutting edge of rural environmental management.

Embracing Integrated Fire Management

A major highlight of the Goromonzi event was the unveiling of the Integrated Fire Management Framework, supported by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This framework represents a critical shift toward comprehensive fire management—focusing heavily on early warning systems, sustainable land use, and capacity building before fires even start.

For Marondera RDC, this national blueprint validates our current trajectory. We are committed to adopting these integrated practices to protect our commercial farms, resettlement areas, and vital natural resources.

The council returns from Goromonzi energized and ready to scale up local enforcement, ensuring that every household and farm within Marondera plays its part in preventing veld fires this season.
